Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of teaching a parrot to go into their carrier for travel, vet visits, and emergency situations.
  • Recognize the different types of carriers available for parrots, such as hard-sided or soft-sided carriers, and how to choose the appropriate carrier for your parrot.
  • Identify the key steps involved in teaching a parrot to go into their carrier successfully, including using a cue or signal, gradual desensitization, and positive reinforcement.
  • Develop the ability to read parrot body language to recognize when they are ready to go into their carrier or becoming stressed.
  • Learn the benefits of marker-based training, including its effectiveness in shaping complex behaviours and strengthening the parrot-caregiver relationship.

Over 10 years experience working in veterinary medicine and 14 years experience working with birds. Currently Rebecca runs her own training service called Around the Flock and is working alongside DACVB resident Dr. Meghan Connolly to provide the best chance of success when treating behaviour disorders.

Rebecca's flock consists of Hodari (African Grey), Chino (Pionus) and Artemis (Cockatiel).
